Gueiren Elementary School (GRES) was founded in 1920 (the 9th year of the Republic of China Era), and has always been the prominent school for culture and education in Gueiren area. Located at No.100, Wenhua 1st St in Gueiren District of Tainan City, its campus is 3 hectares, in which the buildings, trees and plants are well-planned, including several buildings for different functions, 20-year-old royal palms, and 50-year-old Honduran mahoganys, and has been a wonderful place for children’s learning, living and childhoods for many years.

Furthermore, the served and present principals have also been dedicated to the improvement of the school environment, educational facilities and teaching quality, and the harmony among students, parents and the community for the purpose of making GRES a safe, joyful and comfortable “teaching and learning” environment.

As for the English education, being one of leading models in Tainan City, GRES is currently undertaking several kinds of activities to not only promote the students’ English ability but also enhance the cross-cultural awareness.

International Education

International Education in GRES

As we are now in a “ flat ” world, everyone is involved in the global tide, leaving us to face more and more threats. So do our students. Facing this ever-changing and uncertain world, it is more difficult for children to compete and cooperate, because the challenges do come from every corner on the earth. Students nowadays require stronger and more complete abilities, and this is why the international education is important. According to the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, the major objectives of international education in elementary schools are national recognition, international knowledge, global coopetition and worldwide responsibility, not only emphasizing the visions on foreign countries, but also on every aspects of Taiwan by comparing to others. As for the teaching methods, the main is to combine the international elements into courses and teaching, which is accompanied by international communication, teacher training and school internationalization.

In GRES, we have implemented every method mentioned above to response to the objectives provided by the Ministry of Education. Currently in GRES, the combination of international elements into class and all kinds of courses has been executed for many semesters, like western festival experiences. Also, the hardware has been continuously upgraded to support, like bilingual signs and English reading corners.
In addition to basic courses and hardware, GRES has been dedicated to creating opportunities of direct communication for students. We have partnered with Sheridan Park Elementary in Hollywood of USA to form a cooperating relationship of eco-campus schools, where students discuss the feasible eco-friendly proposals in average campus. This partnership allows students to understand the environmental issues and also cultivate their language and cooperation abilities. GRES also works with Bureau of Education of Tainan City Government to practice the English Village activities. Furthermore, GRES also has tried to invite foreigners to visit us, like Italian performers in last October and two Malaysian teachers visiting in December of 2016.

Reader Theatre

What is the Readers' Theatre?

Readers’ Theatre (RT) is a method widely adopted in English education for not only children but through every interval of age. The best feature of RT is that it simplifies the real theatre with the deletion of formal costumes, stage designs, lighting and even the memorization of scripts. The scripts are allowed to be held or put on stands, and the emphasis is on the reading with voice expression and body language.

The primary advantages of RT in elementary education are the simplification of the details of a real theatre and promotion of students’ learning motivation. The costumes, props, and other stage requirements are refined or even deleted, allowing teachers and students to proceed the acting without facing the obstacles of too detailed preparations. Furthermore, the acting of the drama works really well for students’ learning and participation, due to the fact that children are directly involved within, compared to the traditional teaching methods.

With perceiving the advantages and importance of RT, GRES has been adopting it into English class since 2008, and the effect is significant. After almost 8 years working, the RT has been combined into daily English class, and outstanding students are specially trained for the competitions. In 2014, GRES was awarded the Excellent Prize in the A3 Group of RT competition of public and private elementary schools in Tainan. With the dedication of teachers and assistance from all aspects in GRES, the RT has been and will be an indispensable part in English teaching and learning.
